O
niran is a world utterly saturated with color, magic, and adventure. Life here is basically an RPG. Y'know, the kind where you crawl through dungeons while aggressively scooping up all the shiny loot you can find with your greedy little mitts, or maybe the kind where you live a simple life tending to your potato farm. There's also the kind where you collect monsters, probably a ranger thing. Or perhaps a sort of hybrid where you run a magic item shop by day and venture into Dungeons by night to acquire the aforementioned magic items. Everyone is different.

A World of Runes

The magic in Oniran is so rich and plentiful it damn near rivals the air we breathe. It comes from the stars, y'know. Channeled into the world through the rings of pure runestone that surround it, and used by the Elder Dragons to shape the world into what it is today. Although the mysteries surrounding it may never be solved, it's a force that even the most mundane can at least feel and begin to control, but only those who study and train can experience its true potential.

The World is Untamed

Make no mistake, this place has been around for a while. Despite that, the chances of it ever being fully explored and mapped is pretty slim. There will always be another dungeon, another shrine, another town, another forgotten ruin or altar or sacred ground. The remains of a once thriving city lost to time, waiting for just one more person to hear its story. A world that refuses to let itself be known completely, so there will always be just one more adventure.

Adventure is Commonplace

If you really wanted to, you could just pack your bags and venture out on your own quest, or you could head down to the closest tavern and pick up a job that has you hunting wild beasts that can and probably will hurt you, or you could simply do none of that and live your ideal cottagecore life with your cottagecore wife without any worrying about the afterlife.

This is a fantasy world heavy on themes of storytelling and relationships, cause those are super important to me. The world itself is very gamey and colorful, in fact, one of the driving forces initially was my disdain for the belief that if a media wants to be taken seriously it has to be dark and desaturated and "mature", and that's informed the style ever since. The writing itself is very Hobbit-coded, albeit with frequent swearing and references to gratuitous violence. I just kinda fill the world with everything I like, just pure indulgence, if I watch/read/play something and like it then some aspect of it will find it's way into the world, but I still like to think everything is cohesive and grounded in itself. One day I wanna be able to run PF2e games in it, but who knows if that'll ever happen lol. That's about it, this is my only world and it'll probably stay that way bdjhgsbkfjhb.

Love, Community, and Friendship

Oniran is home to 3 Ancestries: Elves, Valkyr, and Knights. Their origins are intertwined with the dragons that once called this world home. Elves were here since the beginning, but the only ones to live amongst them as family. Valkyr came to be when the last Elder Dragon was laid to rest at Titan's Peak, where only a dragon's magic could give life to the rock and runestone within the mountain. Just out of reach to know them, but close enough to know they mattered. Knights are a strange bunch, to them, dragons are the stuff of legend. Stories shared by Elves and values shared by Valkyr. A memory that isn't their own. For a people with no knowledge of where they came from, it's infinitely better than nothing.

Elves were the first to call this world home and the last to call dragons their peers, the memory of whom they're devoted to keeping alive. They're a love story brought to life with a unique connection to the elements that shaped the world. Wild, chaotic, and full of love to share, Elves wear their hearts on their sleeves.

Valkyr are stalwart vikings born from the rock and runestone of Titan's Peak. They've relied on their communities and their ties to the wild to thrive in a land that civilization was never meant to last in. It takes a village to raise a child and a Valkyr to know they'll never be left behind.

Knights are the youngest and most diverse of the ancestries. After finding their greatest passion they will evolve as they grow up to best reflect it, influencing almost every aspect of their lives in some way. If there's anything a Knight wants, it's a few good friends, an adventure to share with them, and a story to tell afterward.

"I won't lie to you, my friend, the world can be a scary place. But it doesn't have to be. Just follow the path and you'll end up right where you need to. Not a path on any map, mind you. The one in your heart."

Embark on a Quest with Friends

The Quest Board Filled with Quests
Document | May 21, 2024

To the left of the entrance there's a massive board filled with Quests. The Quest Board. Around here, they call it The Quest Board Filled with Quests. There's Quests on it, I believe.

Oniran is a lot like monster hunter with magic but some of the monsters can ALSO use that magic so it's really just like if you pulled a gun on a bear and the bear pulls a gun on you and then both the party ranger and cleric go "Oh fuck" simultaneously and then the rock music starts. Also y'all are in a side quest. This is happening in a side quest.

The Rock Music
This is currently my favorite song of all time

The Sauce

This world is just a big melting pot of all my favorite fantasy tropes taken to whatever extreme satisfies me the most.

Everything is vibrant and colorful, video game logic is given explanations, and almost every piece of media I consume will unapologetically find its way into the lore somehow. In this house there is no such thing as cliché.

And if there is then we ignore it.

Themes

My love of Storytelling
  The Power of Friendship
(I wanted to see if I could pull it off)

The relationships you make by choice
There is color even in the darkest places
Aesthetic and vibes are our top priority
Making video game logic canon   Dragons   The energy of an unapologetically over the top shonen

In case you thought I was being metaphorical about the world revolving around stories. I literally made flavor text canon.

And for the video game logic, heres lore for roguelike dungeon crawlers and the concept of a +1 weapon.

I've been reading your world for a while, and this intro hits the nail on the head. It really reflects the vibes I've picked on from your articles, while also giving me a sneak peek into some new stuff / the behind-the-scenes.

I...I love this. You know how people say 'write the story you want to read?' Maybe the story I've been wanting to read for a while isn't a story I need to write at all, but this world of magic and fantasy and adventure and friendship and art that's sitting right in front of me. Excuse me while I go consume the rest of your world's content.

May your worldbuilding hammer always fall true! Also, check out the world of the Skydwellers for lots of aerial adventures.

First impressions, the artwork is amazing. The style gives a unique feel to your world.   Secondly, you write with a nonchalant feel that gives the impression of informality. That’s not a bad thing, it makes it feel less like a textbook reading and more like a conversation that we are having.

That makes me REALLY happy to hear! I always tell people that my favorite writing style is one like The Hobbit, where Tolkein tells you a story as if you just met on a park bench somewhere and you asked him about his world. I think it pairs beautifully with fantasy and I try to use it any and everywhere I can. I'm really glad I pulled it off, thank you!!!

It’s rare to see a world that is so unabashedly dedicated to being fun! I love your style.
